Are you well-heeled?
When I was young, I remember seeing a television soap opera where one of the actresses referred to another man as “well-heeled”. This is one of those wierd things that stuck in my head.
Although I never really stopped to think about what it meant, I’ve always wondered.
About 10 years later, I heard the phrase used again in conversation with a friend of mine. I asked him what it meant and the answer really surprised me.
“Have you ever wondered why some bicycles cost $100 and others cost over $2000? What could possibly justify the costs?
To an average person, all bikes look more or less the same. Because they only look at the general aesthetics. But to a seasoned enthusiast, the ones who like to spend lots of money, will pay special attention to the details. The derailleur, the crankset, the shifters… all of these minor details are very important in establishing the value of the bike.”
So what does this have to do with being well-heeled? In the olden days, your clothing would say a lot about your place in society. Sure, you could fool most people by wearing the same clean, pressed, nicely tailored clothed over and over. But a truly wealthy person would know better.
They would look at your shoes to see how worn they are. Because a wealthy person would not only wear nice clothes, but they would also replace them on a regular basis. And worn-out shoes were a sign of a frugal, working-class individual.
So tell me about your most important customers. Are you putting forward the most successful image for them? Is your company “well-heeled”?
A professional commercial cleaner will truly get your office cleaner than you could ever do it yourself, because they notice details that most people wouldn’t. You may not notice these little details, but your seasoned enthusiast, the ones who like to spend lots of money, will certainly notice.
And most customers would rather do business with a successful company.
