As they say prevention is the best cure, there are a few things you can do to protect your carpet from excessive dust. To begin with the proper use of an entrance mat will help clean off major part of dirt that travels to your office on shoes. When selecting a mat, an important consideration is that it should be long enough. Choose one which can at least fit two steps. Nylon front with vinyl back is better for resilience, moisture and oil absorption. These should be placed on a hard surface so that they can lock in moisture, dirt and cause plasticizer migration. The mat to be effective needs to be cleaned regularly.

Monitoring area outsides the office also helps. It is good idea to keep grass clipped, sand and grit or lose soil off the walkway approaching your office. Vacuuming daily helps yet special care should be taken of the high traffic areas.  These include reception, stairs, elevators and restroom areas.

You can make use of upright vacuum cleaners to clean in the best way. These come with a brush agitation for carpet and have a wide head. Also one must use better efficiency bags for collection which are made of poly-fiber and are double lined. Regular vacuuming will not only improve the health of staff but will reduce periodic maintenance of the carpet. Spillage and spots need to be treated immediately. Another thing to avoid is damp or poorly lighted areas as these are the spots where molds and mildew is most likely to happen. Molds and Mildew are often whitish to bluish green in appearance they give musty unpleasant odor, damage the carpet and health of your workers. Many people are allergic to the molds and mildew and it can even become a major health issue.  When you hire a commercial cleaning company make sure that they are trained in handling these as well.

If you want to treat the area yourself then the first thing to do is to vacuum clean the area or use a stiff brush. If possible take the carpet outside so mildew doesn’t fly in your office. Use a mild detergent with little water and wipe clean area with damp cloth. Dry in sun or under fan. In case the problem persist you can also use a non chlorine bleach or lemon juice and salt. Alternatively add one part of 3% peroxide solution to five part and use. Do not forget to check that the solution doesn’t harm your carpet.
